Your 2006 Brighton Bulldogs MHSAA Division 1 STATE CHAMPIONS

| The Brighton Varsity Hockey Team Defeated Dearborn Unified
6 – 2 to Capture the Division 1 State championship. |
Huron did not threaten in our first play-off game. Our skills and strength dominate and the majority of the game is played in their end. Being up 4-1 going into the third period, we would like to have added more goals. It is a reasonable start on their home ice. We will need to play better on Thursday against Pioneer.
As always, Pioneer is a tough opponent who battles right to the end. While we out-shot them, they come back from a 2-goal deficit to tie the score in the third. We score the winner with 5 minutes remaining to win the closely contested, hard hitting game. We have ended both Ann Arbor team’s seasons on their home ice. Northville is next for the for the Regional Championship.
We established a good fore-check and skated with good energy and purpose. Northville stayed in the game until the third period. After leading 2-0, we took any doubt away with four unanswered goals. Our power-play which had been struggling made a difference with 3 goals in 6 attempts. While excited to win a Regional Championship, our sites are still on something bigger. We get that opportunity on Wed. vs. OLSM, the team that delivered our only defeat.

Orchard Lake St. Mary's |
W 2-1 |
This is the biggest test, with everything on the line. The Olympic ice requires adjustments to our plan which we developed last Sunday when we practiced here. We believe we can beat St. Mary’s and we are prepared. The game turns into a “classic” with our goalie being one save better than theirs. It takes almost two full overtimes but we are going to the final four. Our guys play a great containment game and we counter with speed and good puck movement.
This is our first appearance in the Final 4 since 1995 and our first game ever vs. Marquette. They have been ranked right behind us all year and have an identical record. They are big and have speed up front. We get our first goal in the first minute and are in control of this one. Our puck movement is beautiful and they can’t match our speed and excellent team defense. This is a thing of beauty! One Game / One Day! We have arrived!
We got caught early looking past this team. They skate and compete and get us down 2-1 early into the 2nd period. Our goalie makes a few big saves at this point and with :38 left in the period we get a great goal off our blue line. The momentum turns and 36 seconds later we get the winning goal on some great hustle. The period is all us as we score 3 more, 2 shorthanded. As the clock winds down we can feel the noise of the crowd and our own hearts telling us we are State Champions! Our mission is complete. O games / O days! Just like we planned it!

Opening Night Jitters |
W 2-1 |
Thanksgiving Eve has turned into a great rivalry game between two programs that often end the season playing for the Regional Championship. We end up on the good side of a one goal victory thanks to great goaltending by Jason Spada. We scored the first goal at the 5 minute mark of the first period. Pioneer tied the score on a power play goal early in the second period. The game winner, also a power play goal, was scored midway through the third period. We did not have our best effort in this one. Our passing was slow to develop and the speed we need to depend on was missing. It is still a good road victory to kick the season off!

Clarkston |
Cranbrook Tournament Opener |
W 6-1 |
This game, in this tournament, has also become a traditional game for us over the past five years. Clarkston is always a tough opponent and is usually a top 10 Division I contender. We have had mixed results against them, and they are usually hard fought. We find our legs early in this one and score in every period. The Wolves stayed close through two periods but we get three unanswered goals in the third to take a 6-1 victory and the opportunity to play the host team, Cranbrook, for the championship. The effort here was quite different than what we had against Pioneer.

Cranbrook |
Overtime Victory |
W 4-3 (OT) |
What a great game by both teams. Cranbrook who beat us last year in this match-up by a score of 7-0 looked like they were going to do it all over again. They jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first six minutes of the game. After a brief delay to repair some bad ice, we settled down to a good puck possession game. We tied the score at 2–2 in the second period and had some great momentum going to the third. Cranbrook was not going to roll over and scored the go-ahead goal mid–way through the third. We didn’t give up and tied it up less than three minutes later. There is no scoring until midway through the first overtime when a shot from the point (Mark Kivisto) gets through and we begin our celebration of the second championship here in the last three seasons. This was a gutsy effort by our team! We showed heart and realized our potential if we stick together.

Hartland |
Turning The Tables |
W 6-0 |
In the KVC opener we face Hartland who have not allowed a goal in their first two wins of the season. With lots of jump, great passing, and good positional play, we score two goals in the first five minutes of the game to end the Eagles shutout streak at 6 periods. Another goal late in the first, followed by two early in the second allowed us to coast to a 6-0 victory to open our defense of the KVC Championship. Twelve different players tallied points and both goalies played well to share the shutout.
